The first Belgian digital newspaper
De Standaard, the leading quality newspaper in Flanders, was the first Belgian newspaper to have a mobile site (2008), an iPhone app (2009), an iPad app (2010) and a tablet optimized reading format (2011) for its print morning edition with Twipe. In 2013 dS Avond, a separate digital-only evening edition, with a lighter and adapted format was launched.
We have worked together to develop the first generations of mobile apps and ever since we have created few new versions of the newspaper app. De Standaard HD was a real a revolution in the mobile publishing world and it set the benchmark for all future news tablet applications.
Next to the regular pdf version of the newspaper, users can switch to a specific tablet designed version, optimised for the iPad. Articles are structured in a clever way to fit the screen and offer a unique reading and handling experience. The content is instantly available without any scrolling or pinching. The importance of news photos is given a central place in the application. De Standaard HD lets you view, with a simple touch, all the images of the newspaper and articles in a superb full screen quality.
