Het Nieuwsblad launches new tablet newspaper using the Twipe Digital Publishing Suite

Today Het Nieuwsblad launches a new tablet newspaper available on iPad and Android tablets. The tablet newspaper takes the paradigm of digital newspaper publishing for popular and sports newspapers one step further by presenting the content in easy-to-read templates that exploit much better the possibilities of tablets.

Het Nieuwsblad on tablet important for digital growth

Het Nieuwsblad is a leading popular newspaper in Flanders. The newspaper reaches more than 1 million readers on a daily basis. Het Nieuwsblad has a circulation of close to 300.000 issues. The newspaper has a leadership position in local news with 16 regional editions. It also includes the most extensive Sports newspaper in Belgium.

“For us, this new tablet edition is a very important step in securing our digital future. We really wanted to take a big leap forward in our tablet publishing strategy. Until now we have given our subscribers access to the ePaper version of our newspaper on mobile devices and through a web browser. Readers research has shown that this approach has reached its limitations: the ePaper edition is not so easy to read and navigate. That’s why we are launching this tablet edition now,” says Pascal Weiss, Editor-in-Chief of Het Nieuwsblad. Het added that this new tablet edition should be a key accelerator for the growth of the digital reader base of Het Nieuwsblad.

“The look and feel of our new tablet edition is very strongly inspired by our print edition. The tablet edition also contains the same content. However, the layout of the articles and templates is entirely optimized for tablet devices: it is very visual and allows to integrate extra audiovisual content very easily. The navigation is very intuitive and smooth,” explains Patrick Saliën, Digital Manager of Het Nieuwsblad.

Het Nieuwsblad on tablet: moving beyond Replica to NextGen Digital Publishing

Het Nieuwsblad on tablet has been developed with the Twipe NextGen Digital Publishing Suite. “For Twipe, the launch of this newspaper is an important milestone in the history of our company. Developing the tablet edition Het Nieuwsblad, with its 16 regional editions and its very visual layout, has been a great challenge for our team. We have added a number of new features such as a new Template Family for Popular and Sports Newspapers, integration of interactive Puzzles and Automatic Page Generation in order to make this happen,” explains Danny Lein, Founder and CEO of Twipe.
