As of this week, Concentra’s two main newspapers ‘Het Belang van Limburg’ (HBVL) and ‘Gazet van Antwerpen’ (GVA) are also available on iPad. Both iPad apps have been developed by Twipe. The iPad apps offer a replica Newspaper reading experience, which has been enhanced by the introduction of a number of new and unique features:
The daily newspapers are available to the print subscribers, to iTunes subscribers and through in-app purchase.
Template based headline teasers
The headlines are displayed via tablet optimised templates. In Gazet van Antwerpen, big picture based templates show the main stories of today. These headlines are not behind a paywall to stimulate the impulse buying of non-regular visitors.
The creation of the Headline templates is done with the Twipe Template Editor, the online service that easily allows to create new tablet optimized pages.
User profiling for hyperregional content delivery
Both GVA and HBVL are regional newspapers. They offer highly localized regional content in separate supplements which are only available in certain towns and cities. Het Belang van Limburg for example has 14 regional specific supplements, spread over 48 cities and towns.
One of the key requirements of the digital edition was to allow users to receive automatically their regional news supplement of choice based on their user profile. These separate supplements are also, in a user specific way, included in the newsstand download packages.
Moreover, newspaper subscribers now also have access to all regional supplements that cover another region. All of them are available and can be easily downloaded.
Textview in newspaper layout
Special care has been given to the graphical design of the article light box (the box you get by tapping an article). Instead of a plain rectangle with text and pictures, the articles now appear in a look and feel of the newspaper: adapted text fonts and sizes, colors, integrated logos on top, …
By swiping left or right, all articles of the related page can be consumed easily. Multiple pictures, which can be viewed fullscreen, are also integrated. Two types of article lightboxes have been developed: one for small articles (one column view), one for larger articles (two column view).
