Twipe launches Tablet Optimised Newspaper app at WAN-IFRA in Vienna

More than 82% of readers prefer the tablet optimised newspaper version

Vienna, October 10, 2011. On the WAN-IFRA World Newspaper Week in Vienna, Twipe announces today the launch of its new Tablet Optimised Newspaper App technology. Twipe sets a new milestone in the tablet publishing landscape by combining in 1 iPad app both a Tablet Optimised Newspaper and the corresponding paper edition. The first title to go live using this new technology was the Belgian quality newspaper ‘De Standaard’. One month after the launch, newspaper downloads went up with 46% and triggered a surge in subscriptions. More importantly, the feedback of the readers was overwhelmingly positive. Over 82% now prefer reading their daily newspaper in the new tablet optimised format. With the Twipe Mobile Publishing Platform, the creation of the Tablet Optimised Newspaper takes on average 4 hours.

Today mobile publishing specialist Twipe announces the third release of its mobile apps publishing platform. “The main new feature is the Tablet Optimised Newspaper App. With this technology a newspaper is published in a totally different format, and brings a user-experience specifically adapted to the iPad,” explains Danny Lein, CEO of Twipe. The Tablet Optimised Newspaper integrates all elements people associate to a newspaper: great content, nice fonts, beginning-and-end, text in columns, hierarchy between articles, lay-out, quotes, info graphics, … Tablet specific features such as full screen pictures, video galleries, a news scan, HTML5 advertising and push notifications are integrated. On top of this, the paper version of the newspaper is also available in an advanced PDF Viewer through one single click.

The Tablet Optimised Newspaper App technology on iPad offers support for the iTunes in-app purchase and renewable subscriptions modules from Apple.

First introduction with De Standaard HD resulted in delighted customers
De Standaard, from the Belgian Corelio group, is the first newspaper who launched a Tablet Optimised Newspaper app on iPad. One month after the launch, the first results are very promising. De Standaard HD has been on the number 1 spot in the iTunes Store during 1 week. End-users love the new application: readers tweeted ‘For De Standaard HD I am happy to pay 5€/week,’ and ’ Such a pleasure to read. I am really impressed!’. 82% of the readers prefer the Tablet Optimized Newspaper over the paper version. The app got a strong 4-star user rating in the App Store.

The business impact was huge: newspaper downloads went up with more than 46%. The number of e-subscriptions has shown strong growth along the way.

Creation of a Tablet Optimised Newspaper in four hours
It takes a publisher on average 4 hours to prepare the Tablet Optimized Newspaper. Moreover, the creation process of this iPad version can happen in parallel to the editing of the print edition. To enable this, the new release of the Twipe Mobile Publishing Platform includes an easy-to-use iPad Editor. This backoffice allows to ‘drag-and-drop’ incoming articles, pictures, quotes, … to a template on an iPad page. The system can suggest templates automatically for a specific page or content category. Articles can also be linked automatically to certain templates.

To ensure the right quality, iPad pages can be previewed on the device before making them publicly available.
