An unforgettable internship at Twipe

Hi there, my name is Thomas Vranken. Over 6 weeks of my summer holidays, I had the opportunity to work at Twipe. More specifically, I worked with automated front-end testing. This was a completely new subject for me, but working with nice colleagues made it an enjoyable and educational experience.

In short, the aim of my work was to try and automate parts of the testing done on the new generation of apps that Twipe is currently developing. I worked together with the team, learning more about the development pipeline, and performing QA and technical testing. Even as an intern, I felt that I was a part of the team and that I had an impact on the company from day one.

The testing itself proved to be an interesting challenge. It involved a lot of reading (mainly documentation) but also required trial-and-error experiments on Android and iOS devices, both real and virtual. There were many obstacles along the way, but seeing your tests run fluently on multiple devices was really satisfying.

The internship didn’t focus solely on writing tests. As my experience with the topic grew, I wrote documentation about my findings and the many challenges involved in developing proper scripts. I also had the opportunity to onboard a new starting test engineer!

At the end, I had to construct a business case for the company. They wanted to know whether it would be worthwhile to fully implement front-end-testing, and what the main advantages and disadvantages would be.

Something I really enjoyed during my internship was the great atmosphere. Some examples include:

  • There were several initiatives to welcome interns and get to know the employees in a more informal setting.
  • There is no strict hierarchy; if you need someone’s expertise you can just ask them.
  • Team spirit and taking ownership are appreciated, and I felt inspired to practice these values myself.
  • Being a smaller company made it easier to meet with people from other teams and get a better understanding of how they work together.

Overall, my internship with Twipe was an interesting and fun experience. I learned a lot of new things – both technical and soft skills – and got to meet many like-minded people. I am also pleased that following a successful internship period, I will start a new position as a Junior Software Engineer at Twipe!
