I’ve not been in a classroom for many years, yet somehow, when 1 September hits, I am unwittingly thurst into back-to-school mode.
As the author of Twipe Insights, I follow many industry news sources to stay on top of developements and discussions. If you’re a Twipe Insights subscriber, I’m certain you also follow many of the larger outlets like Press Gazette, Audiencers, or the WAN-IFRA/INMA blogs.
Instead, for this “back-to-school” post, here are some of the top individaul industry sources I recommend you add to your curriculum this year.
Alan Hunter is the Co-founder of HBM Advisory, a media strategy consultancy, and former Head of Digital at The Times of London. He is also the author behind the Editor’s Picks at Tomorrow’s Publisher.
His articles cover everything from subscription and monetisation models, to news avoidance and ethics. He often draws from his own experiences and opinioins which make his posts such an enjoyable and memorable read. It’s also why I recommend reading it on LinkedIn rather than in your inbox since you have the added benefit of people reacting in the comment section. Indeed, his posts’ comments pull in senior people from other publishers who share their own views which is oftentimes just as interesting.
Alan will be running a workshop at the 9th Digital Growth Summit (Leuven, October 15, 2026). The workshop will be centered around the topic of failure, a not often openly discussed theme at industry conferences. The idea to create a workshop around failure was born out of one of his latest articles worth a read here.

Scott Klein spent 25 years where journalism meets technology, including a long run at ProPublica building its data and interactive teams. He is now publisher advocate at Newspack.
Open Journalism was started after his research found new public code repositories from news organisations was down more than 80% from their 2016 peak. The habit of showing your work, which built a generation of newsroom technologists, was stopped and this is his initative to revive it.
So every two weeks he publishes what newsrooms did put in the open. He publishes each initative as a short, easy-to-read blurb with a link to Github repository. Even if you’re not a coder, it’s a great morale booster and an inspiration to see all the great projects people are building.
Nikita Roy is an academic and founder of Newsroom Robots, a podcast on AI and tech in the news industry.
Her interviews are with the people inside news organisations who actually built the thing, describing what shipped and what broke. The feed has been quiet since late May 2026, however, there is amble back catalogue to get you started! Plus, Newsroom Robots is a great listen to on the go or to play when to help you get through a work task that requires your hands more than your mind.
